*** and sucking Enterprise, Shame of Alaska!! We told this story to American people during our trip in Alaska, and they felt so sorry and shameful to us!

We booked and pre-paid a rental car via agency Hotwire with an early-bird promotion a few months ago. And the day when we arrived Enterprise counter in the Anchorage airport, the man asked us if we are from China and it's our first time to come to Alaska, we answered we are from Taiwan and yes. Then after seeing our passports and international driving license, he refused to rent a car to us with a *** awful reason that our international driving license has Chinese words on it and he can't read Chinese words, he needs a translation version!! It's *** ridiculous!

We told him our international driving license has English translation just behind every Chinese sentence, it's indeed translation version! But the man kept saying he can't read it, it's company's rule! ***! Now that you can understand English only, then please only do business to those who is from English-speaking country!

We told him we just finished renting a car in Seattle then fly to Alaska, and we ever rent a car in Europe and Australia and other country with our international driving license only, it's all no problem. And do you know what he said, ha, he said,"Alaska is different from U.S. and other country!" So Funny! OK! If you have guts, please be independent from U.S.

then to say Alaska is different!! And he introduced us to rent a car next to his counter Dollar(Thrifty as well). But we were eager to get our refund first, now that it's not our problem, we kept asking the man to call Hotwire to get refund for us! But he didn't help, just kept saying ruthlessly,"I have no idea, I don't know, I can't help you, it's not my job!" Ok, we said to him if Dollar(Thrifty) can rent to us with our international driving license, why he can't?!

He said, every company's rule is different and why not to make this money if they could? Hahahahahaha, really interesting! You know what we think? We think Enterprise over-rent, in fact they don't have a car which we booked that time!!

It's a peak season, and we booked with a discount, so so Enterprise can make more money in this way! And bully us that we're from Asia, can't speak English fluently, we're just tourists, can't do anything, no time to argue this in our precious holiday!!! We had no idea that time, so we asked our friend who study and live in U.S. for help by mobile.

But still in vain even our friend told him Enterprise's rental rule on the website that only international driving license is required! It's still in vain even after the agency Hotwire communicated with the guy in Enterprise. The agency was nice and willing to refund to us, she felt so sorry to us, and hope we won't get bad mood by this thing. She said it rarely happen.

We even screened the rule on the mobile and showed it to the man, but he just ignored it and said arrogantly," It's impossible to rent you a car!" And we asked to meet a manager, funny what he said, he said he is manager....one of manager! Then he asked us leave for other guests waiting behind! We felt so extremely angry and discriminated and ripped off! Cause it cost us a lot of money and time to rent a car on the spot.

We're not rich and we save a lot for this trip, but disappointment only! If we know this would happen, we would choose to drive to Alaska from Seattle via Canada or buy a car. Anyway, we'll spread this awful experience to any traveling website and forum as possible as we could.

Thank you for reading this long story!! Yuchen Lee and Chihyung Tasi from TAIWAN

Some of the other major rental companies require additional identification in the form of a passport, to back up the international license. With some companies, you could also use your Taiwanese drivers license.

The part about routing you to Dollar/Thrifty, which they do NOT own, was an attempt to help you.

Each company has different policies.

They have no ability to cancel/refund reservations from hot wire because it is a 3rd party.

The part of your story that said it was Enterprise's website that indicated international licenses are accepted should be clear that an English translation is required. Make sure that wasn't the hot wire site. If it's true, I can see how it was very misleading and your position is one that was damaged.

I have noticed in recent years, the Chinese tourist from China have been coming with full documentation that has English translation, and photo copies of the drivers license in a folder.

This may be prepared by travel agents.

Perhaps contacting the government on your end to have the same provisions will also help others that could be caught in the same trap in the future. Otherwise, some of the other major companies can accept your international license.
